This tour will take you into a deep dive of the well kept Italian secret that is Sardinia. You will discover an island that is filled with an independent spirit — influenced by its long history. Known for its beautiful coastline and mountainous interior, we will go behind the scenes to discover its culinary delights with some of the island’s most celebrated artisan producers.

Who?

This trip is designed for both novice and experienced travelers who like to engage with a new place through the lens of food. We will explore the diverse foodways of the region and its cultures by engaging personally with our hosts. History and personal stories will color our many encounters. We encourage attendees to have open minds, adventurous spirits, and a deep passion for traditional foods and their modern-day developments.

This will be an active trip without much break time, great for those of us who would like a fully engaging week. There will be some walking on uneven ground in the city and the countryside. Please expect to walk for as long as an hour.

Our guests are adults of all ages. We keep the group small, 14 guests maximum. This tour will have one Zingerman’s host as your guide and one guide from our tour partner in Sardinia. It also features local experts to bring even more richness and information to the experience.

What about accommodations?

We will be staying in 3 different hotels over the course of the tour in Cabras, Alghero & Cagliari.


Itinerary*

 

Based on when the majority of us arrive, we’ll help arrange a transfer from the Cagliari Airport to our hotel. After checking in and relaxing, we’ll meet downstairs for a group introduction. Then we’ll head into Oristano for an aperitivo and a welcome dinner that will be sure to set the tone for the next several days.

Day 1

Cabras


 

After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll take our private transfer to the Consorzio Pontis Sa Pischer ’e Mar ’e Pontis and enter the world of Bottarga. Our visit will include a lunch featuring this beloved delicacy.

After lunch we’ll head to the city of Tharros. We’ll explore this 8th Century city and take a guided tour archeological sites reported to be the work of the Phoenicians.

A sturdy pair of shoes and a hat to protect your face from the sun are highly recommended for this adventure.

Our heads full of history, we’ll return to the hotel for a short break and perhaps a swim in the pool before heading back into Oristano for dinner.

Day 3

Carbras, Olzai, Zeddiani & Cabras

This morning we’ll have an early departure after breakfast to the town of Olzai.  We’ll dive into the local cheese culture at Caseificio Monte Nieddu — a small, local producer who works with sheep and goat milks to produce cheese. Together we’ll learn about their production, farming practices, and enjoy a lovely lunch together.

A short 45-minute drive away awaits our friend Silvio Carta. Silvio will share his world of Myrtle, Vernaccia, and Grappa. He’ll share a few secrets, show us the difference between his work and others, and leave us all feeling like honorary Sardinians.

The early evening we’ll head back to our hotel where you’ll have time to pack as we depart for Alghero in the morning. This evening is your own and you’ll be free to head into town for dinner, shopping or just relaxing by the pool as the sun dips into the horizon.


 

This morning we’ll collect your luggage as you enjoy breakfast before departure.

On our way to our next location, we’ll stop in Cuglieri for a visit to an organic olive oil producer who works with a local variety of olive called Bosana. We’ll spend some time learning about the process of pressing the olive oil and we’ll take a lovely stroll through the orchard.

Next, we’ll head to the charming town of Bosa for a nice walk and lunch together.  Tucked along the banks of the Temo River this colorful town will surely charm anyone who sets eyes on it.

From Bosa, we’ll make our way to our new home in Alghero.  We’ll check into our new hotel, located just steps from the sea, we’ll give you some time to explore your new surroundings, take a swim or just relax before heading into town for dinner.  The true nature of Sardina will sink in as you’re romanced by the sounds and sights of the sea.  

This evening we’ll head to the city center of Alghero,  known for its beautiful ancient walls and charming cobblestone streets. Tonight we’ll enjoy a lovely dinner together featuring many of the local dishes.

Day 4
Alghero


 

After having only given you a small glimpse into the amazing town of Alghero we’ll head back after breakfast for a local tour of the city itself.  Rich in history, we’ll finish our tour feeling like scholars and experts on the significance of this city and the island in general.

After a nice morning walk, we’ll make our way to a nearby wine producer where we’ll enjoy the fruits of the family’s winemaking traditions.  The family will welcome us in for lunch and a private tasting on their estate.

After lunch, we’ll make our way to one of the most important archeology sites in the area, Complesso Nuragico of Palmavera.  During our visit we’ll enjoy a private guided tour.

Next, we’ll be making our way back to the hotel for another short break before enjoying a special evening with a bit of a modern take on some of the traditional dishes you’ve come to know.


Day 5
Alghero


 

After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll make our way to Thiesi for a tasting lunch with a local pasta producer.  Featuring organically made products you’ll get the full story and cycle of pasta making from the grain to the drying racks.

Then we’re off to Sassari, the second-largest city in Sardinia and one of the oldest cities on the island. Known for its cultural influence on the region, we’ll have a guided walk that better explains its significance as well as having some free time to explore on our own. 

We’ll head back to the hotel in the early evening where you’ll have the opportunity to pack up for departure to Cagliari in the morning.  Relax, pack and have dinner in Alghero.

Day 6
Alghero, Thiesi & sassari


 

Enjoy breakfast at our hotel while we collect your luggage for our final location change to Cagliari.  This morning we’ll head to the town of San Gavino Monreale roughly 2 hours from Alghero. 

We’ll arrive in time for lunch and a lesson with a local Saffron farmer.  We’ll get personal with the highly tedious production of saffron and witness first hand the dedication it takes for such a fine product.

After lunch, we’ll make our way to our new hotel in Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia. We’ll check-in and stretch our legs before dinner in the city.

Day 7

Today is your day!  After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll meet up for a guided walking tour of Cagliari before letting you loose to shop, swim, or just relax after these many days of traveling around the island. You’ll have the opportunity to explore, shop and check out some of the best historical locations this city has to offer.  We’ll provide you with plenty of lunch options and help accommodate any need you have before enjoying the afternoon on your own.

This evening we’ll meet up after your “choose your own adventure” afternoon for a dinner together at a local restaurant owned and operated by a team that has imbued a modern, youthful spirit into their cuisine.

Day8

Today is going to be incredible! After breakfast, we’ll give you the opportunity to take all the knowledge you’ve learned about the regional cuisines and put it to the test in the kitchen.

We’ll make our way to a local kitchen where we have set up a beautiful cooking experience in Maracalagonis.  We’ll step into the kitchen and spend the better part of the morning preparing our lunch with the local chefs and their team.  

Late this afternoon we’ll head back to our hotel in Cagliari to allow you some time to pack up for tomorrow’s departure before gathering for our final dinner together at one of our favorite locations in the city. Tonight’s dinner will allow us to reflect on the past 9 days together as we come full circle.  This night will surely be a celebration.

We will arrange for a one time transfer to the airport based on the most popular departure time

**As always, you’re welcome to arrive early and stay later than the tour dates above.  If you let us know we can accommodate any additional nights and help arrange them for you.

**One thing to note: this itinerary is the current plan, and things may change. We will make every effort to provide the tours and experiences that are described. However, the nature of an ever changing city means that plans may change at the last minute. Also, you always have the option of skipping a particular excursion, but please note that we will be unable to make refunds for any missed meals or other events.
